thanks, phil...it was a nice column. Abe was a fine man. I met him 44 years ago when I covered the Bullets for the Washington Daily News and later knew him even more as I traveled with the Capitals hockey team. When my mother died, Abe made a large contribution to the Heart Association. I'm glad Maureen did such a nice piece...doubt she is as generous with Bush or Cheney.

So deeply sorry to hear about Roy Martin; I believe we accidentally sat together for a while at a reunion, and actually spoke Words. A fine man. I like "Pulitzer nominee." I seem to remember Sid and George Beveridge nominating me for the Big P, the year Janet Cooke won. (The very first year they had a "Features" category.) Even when the poor girl had to give it back - just for using her imagination! A writer's best friend! - I didn't get it. When I shuck my shift, you may call me "a Pulitzer Prize-losing writer." My genuine and heartfelt sympathy to his splendid tribe.

Hi, Phil, Think I'd better delete the Oliphant caricature completely. Okay for my bathroom wall, not okay for general populace, getting strange input. I think I have taken it off my page, will you kindly remove from elsewhere on Star site ASAP? Hope you're having great hols, (You may save a copy for your bathroom, if you wish.) Thanx, Diana.

Yes, that was my experience with Windows 7, too. It seems slower than Vista in starting up and e-mail functions. I think it's just a matter of spending time with it and getting used to the differences. There may be advantages that we just haven't discovered yet!

Phil, this is a nice chat site, but I am not a live online chatter by nature, so it is pretty moot for me. -- Cheers, Donia Mills Steele

Thanx so much, Phil. I think I need to ponder whether I want a blog or a web page (once I know the difference.) I think I'd like to put up not just current comments and mini-columns, but be able easily to guide a reader to segments with some of my poems, (light and heavy-duty;) to old published stories or interviews that I'm fond of; to some other writing, and, maybe, (I like yours a lot!) to photos or artwork. I have to gnaw out stretches of time for myself to do it right. You have so much to teach me, For example: How does one get people to advertise on one's blog, if one wants? How do they pay? But first, I need to get familiar with manipulating art etc., which my friend Stephie was set to teach me before this sudden surgery. I think I'll start by assembling some artwork I want to use, and come grovelling for help in a bit. Thanx again. xoxox, D.

Hi Phil,

Thank you so much for thinking of me on my Birthday. It was fun to be in Palm Desert - nice and toasty, but windy! Hope you're enjoying the fall season in DC. I wish I could see the changing of the leaves in the Shenandoah.

Best Wishes,

Karina
